A Taste of the Roaring 20s
When they say that history repeats itself, they’re not joking. We’ve seen a reemergence in fashion trends, music and dance styles over the years. I swore I’d never wear 80s leggings and baggy jumpers again after I hit puberty, and look at me now! My teens were dominated by flared jeans and wedge sandals (70s, anyone?) and now I favour 1940s glamour in my wardrobe choices. As I previously blogged, swing dancing is a big craze in London, and has been blended with modern beats to create ‘electroswing’. However, some things are best left the way they were - like the roaring 20s, for example.
Of course, I won’t be supporting any alcohol bans, but imitating the trend makes for a great night. Take Prohibition, for example. This monthly event completely recreates the mood of the prohibition era from America, serving moonshine and cocktails from china teacups as a cunning disguise. You can expects flappers, molls and gangsters, showgirls in tassels, feathers and pearls galore. Imagine a scene from Bugsy Malone, but with real grown-ups; it’s a speakeasy paradise! The next event is this Saturday, 11th June and tickets can be bought online at £15.00. It’s at a secret location in the West End; book a Westminster taxi to get you there once you know where to go. Expect decadence and debauchery at this 1920s themed event.
Another venue to get a taste of this era is Volupté in EC4. They have regular cabaret performers and burlesque dancers, with tea parties on Saturday afternoons. It’s the perfect place to come for a tasty three course meal with risqué entertainment. You won’t be expected to dress up 1920s style here like you would at Prohibition, but you can drink in the delectable atmosphere that saturates the venue. Again, it’s £15.00 to see a show, or you can book a table for dinner. I can’t wait to go!
