Westminster Useful Information
When people picture the city of London in their minds, they usually conjure up the image of Westminster. This area of Central London contains many historic landmarks and tourist attractions, and is often thought of as the heart of the capital. Set on the north bank of the River Thames, the area is home to Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. It’s no wonder so many people want to visit!
As you probably know, Buckingham Palace is the official London residence for her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Not only is the building itself a grand and breathtaking sight, but people also enjoy going to watch the changing of the guard; an age old ceremony that is a British tradition. Tourists like to see if they can get a rise out of the stony faced soldiers - you’ll find that it’s almost impossible though! You can book Westminster taxis at any time to take you along to the palace. Check to see if the flag is up; if it is, it means that the Queen is home!
When you’re watching British politicians on the television, you may have seen the House of Lords and the House of Commons; these are found in Westminster. The Palace of Westminster, also known as the houses of parliament,is the meeting place for our government. You will recognise the tall clock tower, commonly known as ‘Big Ben’. Since its creation in the 19th Century, the Great Clock has remained extremely accurate, keeping within one second of the exact time. It’s another popular attraction, and a highly distinguishable London landmark.
Westminster Abbey is a grand, Gothic church. It is the traditional place for coronations and burials in the British monarchy, making it a desirable site to visit. It contains a Museum, and still operates as an active church. If you have an interest in religion or British monarchs, this should be the destination of your Westminster cab in W1.
However, it’s not all history and politics in this area. There are actually a some pubs, clubs and restaurants open to the public, within walking distance of the London Underground station. You’ll get a better choice walking towards the West End, but if you don’t fancy navigating your way there you can always jump in a Westminster taxi instead. If you’re interested in the area, take a walk around during the day to get your bearings. The architecture is very impressive, and is sure to leave a lasting impression.
