Anti-War Mass Assembly
Unbelievably, this Saturday 8th October marks the 10 year anniversary since the start of the war on Afghanistan. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Tony Blair sent thousands of British troops to fight “the war on terror”, but even after all this time, millions of people across the world argue that this war has never been justified. Nobody could have anticipated that this would go on for so long, and the country has been left wondering why our soldiers are still out there.
From the moment the decision was made to go to war, there have been constant protests, fundraising events, rallies and marches; the nation will not rest until the war is over. On this monumental anniversary, people will gather in their thousands once again to show the strength of their opposition, urging the government to listen to what the people want. Anyone is free to go along and get involved; the rally starts in Trafalgar Square at midday tomorrow. Due to the huge numbers expected, it would be wise to take a London City minicab there a bit earlier to make sure you don’t miss the start.
There will be speeches, films, music and performances on the main stage; you can expect to hear from the likes of Julian Assange, Billy Brag, Jemima Khan and John Pilger (to name just a few influential supporters). Once everyone has gathered and heard from the speakers, the march to Downing Street will commence, lead by ex-soldiers and their families. They themselves can testify to the horrors that are still taking place in Afghanistan and Iraq; thousands of people have died needlessly.
If you can’t make it to the Mass Assembly on Saturday but you want to show your support, go to the website and make a donation. They need to raise £10,000 to cover the costs of the day, from publicising to execution. If you’re against the war, now’s your chance to show it.
