Ready for Bonfire Night?
Just when you think you’ve recovered from all the noisy Halloween parties and children hyped up on sugar, Bonfire Night is upon you. It’s not quite as scary, but the loud bangs might make you jump out of your skin if you’re not expecting them! It’s a good idea to watch out for wayward sparklers too - the little ones can get overexcited (definitely not referring to myself - I’m very grown up and mature. Honest). The night is officially on 5th November in remembrance of the failed Guy Fawkes plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. However, there will probably be firework displays taking place across the whole weekend, lighting up the skies of London.
Most large parks and outdoor venues host their own events; some of the best include Crystal Palace, Victoria Park, Richmond and Blackheath. Check if there’s an entry cost before you go - some events are free but others charge. Put on some sturdy boots, wrap up in a scarf and follow your nose to the hot dog stand; you can make a night of it with friends and family. Regardless of the amount of times we’ve seen firework displays, they never fail to amaze and excite, drawing gasps, ‘ooooh’s and ‘ahhhh’s from the crowd.
Another thing you can’t beat is going to a DIY Bonfire Night in your pal’s back garden. Watch out for health and safety risks here because there’s no supervision, but it’s the perfect opportunity to fire up the barbecue one more time before frost-bite kicks in.
Just in case you miss the firework displays this weekend, the Lord Mayor is giving you another chance to see a fabulous event at Waterloo on Saturday 12th November, which can be seen from all the surrounding areas. The best spots for viewing are on Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge, but make sure you arrive early to find a space; it gets really busy. Get there in a Waterloo taxi to make good time!
