Big Issue, Big Walk
If you’ve ever been to a city in the United Kingdom, you probably will have been offered a copy of the Big Issue magazine. It’s commonly known as a platform to help homeless people get back on their feet, giving them a legitimate income that they’ve earned themselves rather than them having to depend on handouts. It’s not a bad read, either; there’s a good mix of current affairs and entertainment. Some people make an effort to buy every weekly installment, and some buy it on a whim when they have spare change, but even the existence of this business helps to raise awareness of homelessness and those living in vulnerable conditions.
This week is The Big Issue’s 20th birthday, and on Friday the people of London are doing their bit to support this cause. The Big London Night Walk will consist of 1000 people walking 25 kilometers at night through the city, raising much needed money for homeless people. They aim to raise at least £250 each through sponsorship. There’s to be no cheating by taking a London City taxi to the finish line! The meeting point for the start of the walk has not yet been disclosed; they’ll reveal these details on the night before the event. Along the way, walkers will be treated to refreshments and even some live music performances; that should keep morale up! The Roundhouse, Conway Hall and Leadenhall Market are amongst the locations getting involved en route.
People who sell the Big Issue are trying to take control of their lives, so the next time you walk past a vendor, don’t ignore them and cross over the street; be supportive, and even if you don’t have any cash on you, you’d be amazed at how often a smile is appreciated! If you want to get involved in the walk, go online to register and start badgering your friends for sponsorship. You’ve got until the end of October to raise money, so what are you waiting for?!
