The Social Network

With Halloween creeping up on us this weekend, you’ll find that the cinemas packed full of horror movie lovers; many are opting for the gore fest Saw 3D, or the spine chilling Paranormal Activity 2. I don’t know about you, but I’m a scaredy cat: I hate horror films! It’s frightening enough walking down a dark street at night, without filling my head with stellar nightmare material. Thank goodness there are still some films showing at the moment that won’t leave me quaking in my boots.

One film in particular has received excellent reviews since its release in the UK on October 15th; critics can’t get enough of The Social Network. Director David Fincher made this drama about the founding of Facebook - the social networking website that has taken the world by storm. The story follows Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s creator; the idea started out when he and some friends at Harvard set up a site to compare the the girls at college. He had just been dumped by his girlfriend, so needed an outlet for his bitterness. You’re drawn into the story straight away; the characters are believable, and being based on a true story makes it even more compelling. However, none of real founders were involved in the making of the film, so you have to take it with a pinch of salt.

Mark is played by Jesse Eisenberg, and superstar Justin Timberlake was cast as Sean Parker, the founder of Napster. You really get a feel for the price paid to achieve success in this film; everyone wants a piece of it, and will try to take you down to get it.

If you’re like me and want to avoid all the scariness this weekend, get yourself along to a cinema to see The Social Network. You can get a taxi in South Kensington if you’re in West London, or an Aldgate taxi if you’re over in the east. Make a night of it!
