Good Old Fashioned Fun
When was the last time you had some good old fashioned fun in London? We’re so overwhelmed with new technology, new trends, new fashion and new cocktails; it’s easy to forget how great it can be to do something traditional on a night out, like going to the theatre. If you think it’s not your kind of thing, think again; there is such a huge variety of shows in the West End, you’re spoilt for choice! You could go for something camp and girly like Legally Blonde, or a classic, world-class show such as Les Miserables. There are shows on with rock music, show tunes or no music whatsoever. A little bit of online research will help you decide what you’re in the mood for, and Westminster taxis will be able to take you wherever you need to go.
One show currently gaining much critical acclaim is End of the Rainbow, the story of Judy Garland’s final few months. It’s ideal for any fan of the actress/singer, or if you enjoy music from the 40s and 50s. Taking place in Trafalgar Studios, the theatre is small and intimate. The seating layout is brilliant here; nobody’s head will block your view, as there is ample height difference between the rows. If you’re in the first 5 rows, it’s like being part of the stage; the action takes place just a few feet away from you.
Tracie Bennett gives an outstanding performance as Judy Garland. She flips from charismatic to desperate, as we watch her lose a tragic battle with prescription drugs. Her mood swings are hilarious at some points, and harrowing at others. The play is set mostly in a hotel room at The Dorchester, with some snippets from her final performances at the Talk of the Town. Bennett, who has already won widespread praise for her performance in Hairspray, does a perfect imitation of the late Judy Garland. Her voice, her mannerisms and her style are all very convincing.
This show is unmissable; we highly recommend that you take a Charing Cross taxi to the theatre, or Embankment tube station is just a short walk away. It will definitely be money well spent.
