A Weekend in the Sun

Vic.jpg

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! It’s finally happened: a hot, bright weekend of glorious sunshine in London! ‘Hooray’, ‘hurrah’, and a host of other gleeful exclamations can be heard in the streets (or perhaps just in my head) as people wind up the working week to enjoy their days off in Mediterranean temperatures. I’m sure you will have noticed that plenty of enthusiastic and optimistic Brits are already in their flip flops, blinding passers by with their exposed pasty legs and donning over-sized sunglasses. Yes, I’m one of them.

If you’re in East London, we would definitely recommend taking an Aldgate East minicab over to Victoria Park - still one of the city’s best kept secrets. The Royal Parks will be flooded with tourists and locals, but this vast expanse of green has enough space for everyone. You can easily while away a whole day here; pack a picnic before you go, and you’ll have enough snacks to last you without having to move from your spot in the sun (or shade, if you wish). You can walk your dog, have a game of football or frisbee, listen to music on your ipod or have a sing-along around a guitar with your friends. Winter always makes me forget how versatile parks can be! We’ll bet your bottom dollar that there will be an ice cream van at the entrance, and there are a few pubs around the area if you fancy a drink. The sun is a great way to get people socialising.

Victoria Park probably hasn’t been descended on by the masses since bonfire night last year; they always put on an impressive display of fireworks, attracting people from all over London. Things may have been fairly quiet since then, with the typical British weather keeping people indoors. Take advantage of this beautiful weather, because you never know how long it will last! If you don’t live close to Victoria Park, one of the E1 taxis in Aldgate East will be able to take you there and then home at the end of the day.
