Aldgate East Useful Information
Aldgate East London Underground station is located in the E1 postcode area, near both Whitechapel and Liverpool Street, and is a great location from which to visit a variety of sites around central and east London, whether on foot or courtesy of an E1 taxi driver.
If you are keen to experience London’s art galleries, the Whitechapel Gallery is a must-visit attraction, as one of the city’s most historically-foremost galleries, and famously the site of the only display in the country to date of Guernica, Pablo Picasso’s famed painting of the aerial bombing of the town of the same name by Italian and German fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. If you are at Aldgate East tube station, you can reach the Whitechapel Gallery simply by taking the eastern exit from the platform, but of course any taxi in E1 will be able to quickly and easily take you there, especially if booking through Tick Tock Taxi!
If you are looking to do some shopping, the nearby Petticoat Lane Market, one of the oldest surviving markets in the country, is also only a short walk away, and an even shorter journey by taxi from Aldgate East! And while in the mood for markets, you would also be advised to make a trip in your Aldgate East taxi to Brick Lane Market, which is open every Sunday, and very well known for its wide range of stalls selling all manner of unusual items, and great bargain prices.
Of course, the market is far from all that Brick Lane is known for! This historic road predates most of the surrounding city, and has been known for its immigrant populations since the seventeenth century. It has been a hub for Irish immigrants, Ashkenazi Jews, and is of course in the present day most heavily associated with its Bangladeshi community, which has made it famous for its many restaurants and curry houses, whose close proximity leads to many of them offering all manner of highly competitive deals to attract customers. This succession of different immigrant populations, each bringing different religions, has led to one building changing from a church to a synagogue, and more recently to a mosque as religious trends in the area moved from Christianity to Judaism to Islam!
And of course, if you’re in the Aldgate East area, you are only a short distance from Liverpool Street, one of the main transport junctures of central London, making this little part of east London a perfect base from which to explore the city - and come back for a curry when you get hungry!
