The Press Photographer's Year
The Press Photographer’s Year is the only competition of its kind in the UK, recognising the brilliant talents of media photographers who catch clever and moving images from across the world to be used in UK media. This is the fifth year that the competition has been running and it’s completely unique; all of the pieces are showcased for everyone to admire.
UK Press Photographers formed the BPPA in 1984 (British Press Photography Association), and it has played an integral part in raising awareness about the issues that affect the photographic industry. On the 30th June this year, they announced this year’s winners. The categories include arts, entertainment, portraits, news and sports.
David Bebber of The Times scooped the prestigious title of Photographer of the Year; the image that led him to victory was of Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi, who was standing protected behind glass while a military parade marched to commemorate his 40th year as head of State. Other winners included Rebecca Harley, Keiran Doherty and Mark Stewart, amongst many others.
The annual exhibition of winning photographs have been on display in the National Theatre in Southbank since July 10th, and will be there until 11th September. If you’re able to get to Waterloo, it’s well worth a look. You can visit between 9.30am and 11pm, from Monday to Saturday, making it easy to fit into your diary. If you book a London taxi online to get you there, it will be a hassle free day full of memorable images that will stay with you. Even if you’re not particularly interested in photography, seeing this is both enjoyable and moving; it makes you appreciate the talent we have here in the UK.
It couldn’t be more easy to book a cab in London; gone are the days where you have to stand on a street corner with your arm out, waiting to see one with a light on. Now you can just log online wherever you are (using your iphone or computer) and find the best quote straight away. Visit Tick Tock Taxi for all your London cab booking needs.
Altogether, 7713 photographers were entered into the competition, with 16 winners chosen from a shortlist of 119 finalists. To win one of these titles is the best a British Press Photographer can hope for, so congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
