Halloween In London
That time of year is approaching again... on the weekend leading up to 31st October, London will be celebrating Halloween. With trick or treating, kids competing and candy eating, things can get quite exciting! You’ll notice a lot more horror films showing at cinemas across the city and on your televisions, setting the atmosphere for the scariest night of the year.
It has become tradition in the UK to make an occasion of Halloween; it is largely a secular celebration, giving people of all ages to dress up and release their inner child (or their inner scaredy cat!). Many households carve wicked-looking faces into pumpkins; they can be hollowed out, with a candle or tea light placed inside to make a creepily festive lamp. Look out for these in stores and on window sills - they’re a common decoration at this time of year. Just in case you’re unfamiliar with Halloween, listen out for knocks on your door. Children often dress up in costumes such as witches and monsters, and will ask you ‘Trick or Treat?’. You either give them a treat such as sweets, or they will play a trick on you. It’s fairly standard to avoid pranks and give them some sweets, so stock up before Sunday!
For the grown ups, there will be plenty of parties and events taking place this weekend. If you’re out in the West, catch a Shepherd’s Bush cab over to Monument to see the Halloween show at Proud Cabaret. They’ll be injecting some glamorous burlesque into a scary theme. For a proper fright, try out the events at London Dungeons and London Bridge Experience; they’ll be going all out with the ghouls and gore. Shepherds Bush taxis are familiar with tourist attractions like these and will take you straight there.
Most bars and clubs will be jumping on the band wagon too, so you can probably go anywhere in London in your fancy dress costume. Everyone will appreciate the effort!
