White City Useful Information
Until 1908, the area we know as White City was nothing more than farmland. It was this year that it hosted the Summer Olympics and the Franco-British Exhibition, really putting it on the map. Several other exhibitions were held there in subsequent years, and the white marble cladding used around the pavilions earned the name ‘Great White City’ for the area. The White City Stadium where the Olympics were held was opened by King Edward VII; over the years it was used as a greyhound racing track, as a football training ground for the Queens Park Rangers and hosted a match during the 1966 World Cup. It was demolished in 1985, making way for the new BBC Broadcast Centre, however the athletics finishing line can still be seen outside the building.
Today, the West London district is a well known location to both Londoners and visitors alike. It is most famous for being home to the aforementioned BBC Television Centre; shows are hosted here daily, attracting members of the public to watch programmes in the live audience when they acquire tickets. It has also become a popular residential area, like the rest of the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham; situated north of Shepherd’s Bush, it’s just outside the central hub of the city.
As you might expect with a busy London location, there are plenty of transport links around here. You can either get a W12 White City taxi to anywhere you need to go, or you could opt for public transport; there is a stop at White City on the central line of the London Underground, with Shepherd’s Bush, Shepherd’s Bush Market and Wood Green nearby. There is also a good bus service serving the whole area. These tube stations are used frequently by consumers who go to visit Westfield, the vast shopping centre built here in 2008. With all the shopping bags you’re likely to accumulate, it’s a good idea to book a White City minicab to take you home! It can be quite hard work lugging them across town.
This is a useful place to stay if you’re visiting the city for business or pleasure; it is very close to well known London locations such as Bayswater, Notting Hill and Paddington. You’ll be able to travel easily to all the attractions and famous landmarks, and just a short White City cab ride to the West End. As with anywhere in London, you won’t be short of hotels, restaurants and bars - just take a look around you! You’re sure to enjoy your time here.
