Wandsworth Useful Information
Wandsworth is the name of a district and a Borough in South London; it’s classified as one of Greater London’s 35 major centres. If you’re visiting the area for any reason, you might find this information useful.
Wandsworth is such a popular area because of its proximity to the city of London; it is an easy commute, making it convenient for those who work in the centre of town. There are several London Underground stations here, such as Balham, Clapham South and East Putney (to name a few). There are also three overground railway stations; London Victoria is just 12 minutes on the train from Wandsworth Common station. Regular buses operate around the area, as well as there being Wandsworth taxis available at any time. Many people prefer to avoid public transport and opt for the SW11 minicabs Wandsworth has on offer; it’s particularly convenient if you have luggage to carry, or if there are any problems with the trains and buses.
There are some places in this district that you should definitely see. Take the long riverside walk, for example; leading to the West End and Battersea Village, this former wharf is a picturesque treat for those who enjoy the outdoors. There are new apartment blocks built along the way, with several bars and restaurants there too. Try out ‘The Waterfront’ for glorious views across Chelsea Harbour.
Along the high street, you’ll find the Arndale Centre (now called the Southside Shopping Centre). This is a great place for a bit of retail therapy, with many of the recognisable clothing brands as well as a cinema and restaurant area. Traffic does get rather heavy around this area, so Wandsworth cabs in SW18 will avoid this route where possible.
At the top of East Hill, you’ll find Wandsworth Common - sometimes nicknamed ‘the Toast Rack’ by locals; here, beautiful Victorian townhouses are highly sought after and have some of the highest property prices in London. Around this area there are some lovely boutiques and established restaurants, such as Chez Bruce (which received a Michelin star in 1999); it used to be called ‘Harveys’, where celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey trained under Marco Pierre White. In 2006, it was named London’s favourite restaurant.
If you are staying in the area, there are plenty of options available for accommodation; simply search online for a comprehensive list of hotels and B&Bs. It’s a prime location, close enough to take advantage of everything the city has to offer without staying right in the hub of it!
