Tower Hill Useful Information
If you happen to be passing through Tower Hill on your journeys by taxi in EC3, you are passing through one of the oldest and most historically significant parts of the city of London. Archaeological excavations around the area of Tower Hill have produced evidence of settlement along this part of the Thames from as far back as the Bronze Age, and also hosted the site of a small Roman village which was razed by Boudica. It is also, of course, famous as a site of the public execution by beheading of many prominent historical figures.
If travelling by taxi in Tower Hill, you may be interested in visiting the Tower Hill Memorial, dedicated to sailors from the Merchant Navy killed in action during the two World Wars of the early twentieth century. In total, there are some thirty-six thousand names engraved on its plaques, a seemingly huge number, but nevertheless a tiny proportion of the total number of soldiers and civilians killed during this period, of course.
Perhaps the most obvious landmark you might want to visit by Tower Hill taxi is, obviously, the Tower of London itself, which has been an imposing feature of London’s anatomy since it was founded following the Norman Conquest in 1066. The Tower was originally built as a royal stronghold by William The Conqueror, but became much better known by the sixteenth century as a luxury prison in which political prisoners were held and in many cases executed. It is now, of course, a historical landmark and tourist attraction, and the place you will need to visit on your EC3 taxi journey if you want to see the Crown Jewels.
The other major London landmark in this area is, of course, the unmistakable Tower Bridge, which crosses the River Thames by the Tower of London. The bridge features an exhibition which allows walks along its upper walkways, which provide a great view over the Thames.
The area surrounding the Tower of London, including Tower Hill, were traditionally known as Liberties of the Tower, meaning that they fell directly under the jurisdiction of the Constable of the Tower, rather than one of the more usual local authorities. In modern time, this area is now the borough of Tower Hamlets, comprising most of the inner East End, as well as much of the Docklands area, so if you have a full day to explore, there’s certainly plenty to do and see!
