Southwark Useful Information
The district of Southwark is one of the oldest parts of London. The River Thames runs along the North side of it, and it’s located between the city of London, Tower Hamlets and Lambeth. Much like Southbank, it has undergone an extensive amount of regeneration over the last decade. Originally, the area was made up of several parishes, then later it was a centre for factories and the light industry. These days, Southwark is a major business centre, home to a number of national and international corporations. Southwark taxis are kept busy taking business people to meetings in the area throughout the working week.
Here, you’ll find shops, bars, restaurants and galleries; there’s also a developed residential area that is always gaining popularity. It’s a great place to live, just walking distance away from the city centre and the West End. You’ll also find gems such as Borough Market by London Bridge; amongst the labyrinth of small streets, this sprawling food market attracts people from all over London. It’s open from Thursday until Saturday every week, and offers a vast range of gourmet delicacies, fruit and vegetables. It’s open during weekday mornings for wholesale too, and is one of the biggest food markets in the world. If you’ve never been, it’s well worth a visit; book a Southwark minicab in SE1 to take you directly there.
Southwark Cathedral was built over 1000 years ago in a Gothic style. It’s just a stone’s throw from Borough Market and London Bridge railway station, and is used for award ceremonies by some local Universities. It is open to the public, and some Southwark residents go along every Thursday to sing in the choir. It’s a great meeting place for the Christian community. You might even recognise the exterior of the cathedral from an episode of Doctor Who!
Ministry of Sound is one of the most famous nightclubs in the world. Clubbers rave about the garage, house and funky beats, and the brand is so well recognised that they often release dance CDs compiling hits played by their resident and guest DJs. You’ll find the Ministry of Sound in Southwark, near Elephant and Castle Underground station. The tubes probably won’t be running by the time you leave the nightclub in the early hours, so make sure you book a cab in Southwark to get you home safely. For any club lovers in London, this place is a must!
