Southfields Useful Information
Are you looking for a place to stay outside the centre of London? City life isn’t for everyone, but there are so many great sights and activities, it can’t be missed! However, thanks to the cheap and efficient transport in and around London, it’s very easy to commute. This means you can stay in Suburban districts like Southfields in the London Borough of Wandsworth, enjoying the rural elements in close proximity to the city. It’s situated between Wimbledon and Putney, in the south-west of London.
Southfields was actually just fields up until the end of the 19th century; today, it largely comprises of a grid of streets with Victorian terraced houses lining them. It used to be a more working-class area, but as the area has continually developed, house prices have risen dramatically. It’s popular because there are pretty parks, good primary schools and a sense of community. There is a London Underground station here on the District Line (found in Zone 3), as well as stops at East Putney and Wimbledon Park nearby. South West Trains operate in the area too, and there’s a good bus service. You’ll also find Southfields taxis very useful; they’re on hand around the clock to take people into the city or to surrounding areas. Many people use Southfields minicabs on their trips into London.
There is a fairly diverse community here; many young white South Africans have immigrated here for career opportunities, and the Fazl Mosque draws Muslims here too. You can choose from Italian, Thai and Indian restaurants if you want to dine out locally, as well as some traditional style pubs to have a drink in. You’ll find a JD Wetherspoons pub here called The Grid Inn; the well known chain serves cheap food and drink and is popular across the country. There are also plenty more options in the surrounding areas, which are just a short ride away in a Southfields cab.
There are a few hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in the area, but make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment. It is an ideal location to stay in; if you live here already, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Here you have the best of both worlds; a quiet, suburban life, just around the corner from all the delights of the big city! With this winning combination, it has become a very popular district.
