Russell Square Useful Information
Russell Square is remarkably tranquil for such a central area of London. Just a short walk from Kings Cross and Euston, it is based in the London Borough of Camden, WC1. The name refers to the large, grassy square in Bloomsbury. It’s a lovely, natural space with trees, paths, flowerbeds and a fountain, surrounded by some beautiful buildings steeped in history. Nearby are the main buildings of the University of London, including Birkbeck college and SOAS. Students of all ages study here, making the area and the community very diverse.
Russell Square tube station is just north-east of the square on Bernard Street, and is a very popular method of public transport. Here you can take the Piccadilly Line within Zone 1; unusually, there are three large elevators here but no escalators. This can make rush hour very crowded, with many office workers located here. There are also several bus stops around the square, and even more in Holborn down the road. If you’d prefer a more direct method of transport, Russell Square taxis are always available for bookings; you can book one of the minicabs Russell Square has to offer any time. This is advisable if you have heavy luggage or bags to carry, or if you prefer a private service. Russell Square is one of the few places that you can still find a Cabman’s Shelter, which is a Grade II listed building. There are only thirteen left now; they were once used as a resting place for the drivers of Russell Square cabs in WC1, where they could sit down, have something to eat and drink and read the paper.
Bloomsbury and Russell Square are very popular locations for tourists and business people to stay in because there are so many hotels in the area. Also, it’s easy to get around London from here because it’s so central. If you’re planning to visit the area, you’ll have plenty of accommodation options to choose from.
Sadly, there are some now some negative connotations connected to Russell Square; on 7th July 2005, two bombings occurred nearby. One was on a tube train coming from Kings Cross Station, and the other was on a bus in Tavistock Square. There is a memorial in the square now, remembering those who lost their lives that day. Around this time, many were put off using public transport, and chose Russell Square taxis instead. Today, things are back to normal and the area is perfectly safe. It’s a lovely area to visit, whether it’s for a quiet walk around the grass squares or a stay in one of the hotels nearby. Don’t miss out on this London gem.
