Putney Useful Information
Putney is a very desirable place to live or to visit; it’s a lively district located in West London. What was once an area where Londoners came to enjoy fresh air, wide open spaces and play sports or games is now a metropolitan centre; it’s now full of high street stores, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, banks and offices. Based around the River Thames, the area is picturesque and cosmopolitan. It is very popular with young professionals, partly because of the easy transport links into central London; an overground train goes to Waterloo every 5 to 10 minutes, making for a quick commute to work in the city.
As well as the regular overground service, there are two London Underground stations here. One is East Putney, and the other is Putney Bridge across the river. Regular bus services operate to surrounding areas and into the city, and Putney taxis cover the whole of Greater London. Whether you need a taxi from Putney to the airport, or if you’re in the city and need a minicab to Putney, you’ll have no problem getting fast, reliable transport.
One of the things Putney is famous for is rowing and boat races. It has been one of the most significant places for it in the United Kingdom since the 19th century, and still is today. There used to be too much commercial traffic, such as steam boats clearing up sewage, on the rest of the River Thames. Due to Putney Bridge being too low for large boats, this area was kept fairly clear making it ideal for rowing. Today, over 20 rowing clubs are based at Putney, and it is where the annual University Boat Race takes place; if you visit the area during this time, you’ll really get caught up in the team spirit. Crowds line the bridge and the riverbank to watch the races, cheering on the rowers and making a day of it. It’s especially good during the summer - the good weather really brings people out into the streets to celebrate together.
If you’re having a night out in Putney, there are plenty places to eat. You’ll find Indian and Chinese restaurants, Italian and British, restaurants serving steak or vegetarian selections. You also have a great choice of pubs and bars, so you definitely won’t get bored! If you’re drinking alcohol, make sure you book Putney taxis to get you home safely, especially if it’s after midnight and the tubes have stopped running.
