Notting Hill Useful Information
Based in the affluent borough of Chelsea and Kensington, Notting Hill is one of the most well known places in London. This is partly due to the blockbuster movie by the same name, which starred Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts; the love story was set right in the heart of the Notting Hill area, featuring Portobello Road market, shops and restaurants and many well known streets. It gave people from all over the world a glimpse into West London life.
The Notting Hill district is very fashionable and cosmopolitan. Residences here are highly sought after, with many large Victorian terraced townhouses still standing proudly. Property prices vary, but are generally quite high in keeping with the upmarket tone of the area. You’ll find many high-end restaurants and designer clothes boutiques, especially around Westbourne Grove. If you want a luxury shopping trip, take a Notting Hill taxi there and spend to your heart’s content.
Another thing that makes this place so famous is the huge event that takes place every August bank holiday; Notting Hill Carnival. Led by London based Afro-Caribbeans, the two day celebration attracts up to a million people each year. Music floats, colourful costumes and dancers parade the streets, while thousands line the pavements to watch. There has been some violent incidences in the past so care should be taken when visiting the Carnival. Prepare yourself for the large amount of people, as it is one of the biggest street festivals in the world. On these two days, W11 taxis in Notting Hill are limited because many roads are closed off for the parade.
It is well worth visiting the market on Portobello Road. If you like antiques, go along on Saturday to see the glorious selection of second hand treasures. It’s a popular tourist destination, and there is a friendly, artistic atmosphere in the whole area. During the rest of the week, you can browse the market for fresh fruit and vegetables.
As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why you’d want to visit Notting Hill. It’s beautiful all year round, and you’ll never be short of quaint cafes, independent stores, pubs and restaurants. Book a Notting Hill cab in W11 to take you there and enjoy a day out; there are plenty of hotels to choose from too should you want to stay longer - which you probably will! Perhaps you could get into the bohemian vibe by staying in one of the luxury boutique guesthouses.
