North Kensington Useful Information
The area of North Kensington is situated just above Notting Hill Gate in West London, and below Harrow Road. It’s the main residential area of Notting Hill, and has seen some huge events in its time. Going back to 1958, this is where the race riots took place. Back then, white working-class locals became hostile towards the influx of Caribbean immigrants who arrived after the end of World War II. From August until September that year, more aggravation built up until there was fighting in the streets; the Metropolitan Police made many arrests and managed to restore the peace.
Today, Notting Hill is still a cultural melting pot, and the community now live in harmony with one another. This is partly thanks to Notting Hill Carnival, which was founded in 1964 in response to the riots. The Carnival attracts people from all over the country to enjoy Caribbean music and culture; it is now one of the most popular annual events in London. Every August bank holiday, the roads close for two days to make room for the parade. There’s no chance of North Kensington taxis getting through the area while the parade is on!
You might also recognise this area from the film ‘Notting Hill’, which starred Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. It was based in the residential area and made it much more popular for tourists. Many still now request an NW10 taxi in North Kensington to go and see the famous blue door, which has apparently now been painted black! The film’s director, Richard Curtis, was a resident of the area when he came up with the idea for the film. He loves the fact that it’s so diverse, with influences from cultures all over the world.
Once home to slums, North Kensington now has some of the highest property prices in the city. The Victorian houses are a hit with investment bankers from around the world, making the area even more cosmopolitan. One of the most notable streets is Portabello Road, which is home to the eclectic market. Book one of the minicabs North Kensington has to offer to go along for a great day out, exploring the stalls for fresh food and antiques. W10 cabs would be happy to take you there.
