Moorgate Useful Information
Moorgate has been around in one form or another for centuries. It was originally a postern in the Roman built London Wall, which was constructed some time around 2AD. Astonishingly, some parts of this wall still remain and can be seen on tours of the city. The postern was turned into a gate around the 15th Century. Today, it is a street that stands proudly in Central London, home to buildings old and new, as well as being a financial centre. It’s not actually a gate any more as the name would suggest, but it’s nice to keep some of the city’s heritage! Many investment banks are located here, so you’ll see your fair share of business suits and briefcases on a typical day.
In 1975, the London Underground saw a terrible tube crash here that killed 43 people. There have since been measures taken to stop trains automatically at dead ends, but some still prefer to take Moorgate taxis for a fast and safe method of travelling. There are many more cab offices in Moorgate than there used to be, so you have plenty to choose from when you need an EC2 taxi.
Due to its central location, Moorgate is a popular place for tourists to stay when they visit London. It’s just a stone’s throw from Tower Hill and Shoreditch, with easy connections to the West End and other busy areas. It’s also close to Kings Cross and Liverpool Street for national train connections. You’ll never be short of places to stay, as there are plenty of accommodation options here - from budget hotels to luxury suites. You’ll also find a huge selection of bars, pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants, some of which are open until the early hours; join the city boys for after work drinks in the wine and cocktail bars, or get some cheap grub at Wetherspoons.
You might want to book a cab in Moorgate if you’re going out for the evening; London can be quite difficult to navigate your way around, so travelling door to door is ideal. The London Underground is a very popular way to travel, but it’s best avoided around rush hour if possible; it gets very busy between 7 and 9am, then from 5 until 7pm. Unless you fancy being crammed up close to some hot and bothered commuters, it’s not advisable! Tubes generally stop running around midnight and start again at 6am. Some buses run throughout the night, but check your route before travelling. You can book a taxi in EC2 at any time to come and collect you immediately - make sure do this if you’re going to have an alcoholic tipple!
