London Bridge Useful Information
If you’re looking for landmarks to visit by taxi in EC1, London Bridge is historically one of the oldest parts of the city. There was very likely a bridge in this location as far back as the Roman occupation, at which time the city (which takes its name from its Roman name, Londinium) was constructed surrounding this part of the River Thames, and parts of the original Roman wall can still be seen while visiting the area by London Bridge taxi, but bridges of one form or another have existed here throughout the subsequent Anglo-Saxon and mediaeval periods right up to the present day.
In its original form, the 13th Century London Bridge which is most historically famous was lined with up to two-hundred tightly-packed buildings and shops, which caused such crowding and obstruction that it could take up to an hour to cross the river, and many people chose to cross by ferry-boat instead! These buildings were later demolished, and the whole bridge was subsequently dismantled and replaced in the 19th Century to a new design by famed engineer and bridge-builder John Rennie.
This version of the bridge was famously sold in 1967 to American oil-magnate Robert McCulloch, who had it painstakingly dismantled and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to act as the centrepiece of an English-themed park which is reputedly Arizona’s second-most-popular tourist attraction. However, you would be hard-pressed to find an EC1 taxi driver willing to take you that far, so perhaps it would be best to concentrate for now on the many tourist attractions nearby the rebuilt modern bridge in central London!
As well as the famous London Dungeon (and the newer, notably more low-budget London Bridge Experience) which are located directly by the south end of the bridge, a taxi from London Bridge could, for example, take you to the iconic Tower Bridge, which now allows access to its upper walkways for a spectacular view of the river Thames. And of course, Tower Bridge takes its name from an even more iconic monument of London’s history: the Tower of London itself, in which many historically notable figures have been incarcerated and executed.
For those with an interest in the military, the decommissioned museum-ship HMS Belfast is moored nearby London Bridge, and the hands-on Winston Churchill's Britain At War Experience might also be worth a visit for further war-related museum browsing. An interest in architecture or religious history might incline you towards visiting Southwark Cathedral, and if you need to stop for something to eat, why not take a look around Borough Market, famous for its huge variety of delicatessen food stalls?
All in all, there are few better-placed locations to visit on a day-trip to London than London Bridge!
