If you’ve never been to Leicester Square, you may well have seen it on TV; many of the biggest film premieres in the United Kingdom take place here. The energy in the square is incredible, with camera lights flashing and smiles dazzling; it’s quite an experience!
Leicester Square is a pedestrianised square in the heart of the West End, in central London. In the middle is a small grassy park, where you’ll find some famous statues; William Shakespeare is in the middle, with a bust on each corner. Charlie Chaplin is the newest addition, helping his memory live on in this famous entertainment district.
Many people refer to Leicester Square as Cinema Land due to the number of large cinemas there; The Odeon on the east side is the biggest, followed by the Empire. On the north side of the square is Vue. Film lovers flock here to see the newest releases on the big screen. The area is also known as Theatreland; there’s even a signpost stating this. West End shows and musicals are shown in the many surrounding theatres. In the square, you’ll find the Official London Half Price Ticket Booth, now called TKTS. Both locals and visitors to the city come here for discount tickets, which are usually on sale on the same day of the show.
There are lots of bars and clubs in and around Leicester Square, making it very busy on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s a great place to go out; you can find cocktails, dance floors, sofas and wine bars - whatever you’re looking for! Remember to arrange your transport for the evening if you’re planning on having a few drinks; you’ll have no problem booking a Leicester Square taxi at any time. The WC2 minicabs Leicester Square has to offer run around the clock, so you can stay out as late as you want. There is a tube station here, but the trains stop running shortly after midnight; they start up again around 6am. At Leicester Square tube station, you can take the Piccadilly Line and the Northern Line; the entrance is just outside of the square itself, on Charing Cross road.
If you book a Leicester Square taxi in WC2, you’ll have no problem getting around; you’ll avoid the crowds on the pavements and the cold queues at bus stops! Don’t miss this brilliant entertainment district when you’re in town; it’s one of the most lively, dynamic places in London.
