Kings Cross Station Useful Information
London Kings Cross is one of London’s busiest railway stations; it was built as a central London terminus in 1852. It borders the London boroughs of Camden and Islington, located on the North side of the city. If you’re coming into the capital, this is one of the best places for transport links; not only are there several bus stops outside and Kings Cross station taxis operating 24/7, but there are also six London Underground lines connecting here: the Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria, Circle, Hammersmith and City, and Metropolitan lines. For this reason, the whole area becomes quite congested during rush hour! Overcrowding has lead to some parts being closed off, but work is currently underway to open more entrance and exit gates to resolve this problem.
Connecting onto Kings Cross is St Pancras station; both offer trains to national destinations, but St Pancras is also the terminus for the Eurostar, which runs a high speed service to Paris and Brussels through the underground Channel Tunnel. The two stations are across the road from each other, but can be considered as one when interchanging; often, those who are unfamiliar with London simply order a taxi to Kings Cross St Pancras station. Kings Cross serves destinations such as Peterborough, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburg; from St Pancras, you can travel to Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
Inside both of these mainline railway stations, you’ll find plenty of facilities. You may encounter a small charge to use the lavatory (around 20p). There are coffee shops and delis, as well as fast food restaurants. You’ll find WH Smiths, Boots and Upper Crust, to name just a few. Many people are hungry and thirsty after completing a long journey, so these retailers are essential!
It’s a good idea to book a St Pancras station taxi if you have heavy luggage to carry; any of you who have attempted to lug it on public transport will know what we mean. Tubes and buses in central London can get very busy, with commuters squeezed in like sardines, hot and bothered and pushing for space. Kings Cross station minicabs are like a dream compared to that!
One of the reasons that tourists like to take a cab to Kings Cross Station is to see the famous (but non-existent) platform 9 3/4; it was featured in the books and films of ‘Harry Potter’ - a phenomenon that swept the nation over the last decade. Catching onto the idea, the station created an iron sign reading ‘Platform 9 3/4’, and underneath there’s a luggage trolley that looks like it’s disappearing into the wall. It’s worth going just to see that if you’re a J.K Rowling fan!
