Kensington Olympia Useful Information
The Kensington Olympia tube station was simply called Kensington station when it first opened its doors in the mid-19th century (1844 to be precise), but gained its usually parenthetical appendage when it reopened in 1940 to serve shuttle services to Clapham Junction and Earls Court.
The station takes its name, of course, from the nearby Olympia exhibition centre, which is easily reachable by local W14 taxi services. Built across four acres of ground at the height of Victorian industry, the Olympia opened in 1885 as the National Agricultural Hall, its Grand Hall proudly boasting itself at the time to be the largest building in the United Kingdom of Great Britain to be covered with an iron and glass roof.
The International Motor Exhibition is no longer held there, but the Olympia does still play regular host to a variety of events which you might choose to ask a Kensington Olympia taxi driver to take you to, including the Olympia International Horse Show, or if the interest takes you, the annual Genealogy And Family History Show or the British Educational Training And Technology Show.
If you are staying near Kensington Olympia station but don’t fancy a day trip out to the Olympia itself, there are plenty of other attractions in the Kensington area, all of which are quick and easy to get to by a taxi in W14.
For example, you could visit one (or all!) of the many museums in South Kensington by taxi from Kensington Olympia. These were mostly built following the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park on land bought by the organisers in order to provide space for institutions dedicated to the sciences and the arts in central London, and include such landmark sites as the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria And Albert Museum, all of which regularly feature fascinating special displays and exhibitions - if you’re in the area, you should check their websites for details of their latest events!
Kensington Olympia station could be a great place to stay while in London, for its proximity to so many of West London’s most famous attractions, but also for its travel links. The frequent District Line service to Earls Court makes it easy to reach stations all across the city via the District and Piccadilly lines, and it is of course a very simple matter to book a Kensington Olympia taxi using Tick Tock Taxi, and go wherever your fancy takes you!
