Hoxton Useful Information
The east London area of Hoxton is a well-known haunt of the ultra-trendy, known for its art galleries, clubs and live music venues, all of which are easily accessible by N1 taxi if you’re in the mood for a wearing the latest in indie-chic and hitting the town. The area apparently derives its name from an Anglo-Saxon dun which occupied the position prior to the Norman Conquest, which belonged to someone called Hoch, leading it to be described in the Domesday book as “Hodgesdon”. Its later eighteenth century reputation was as a district of lunatic asylums and madhouses, and it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that the modern Hoxton we now know took shape.
There are many interesting art galleries, clubs and venues to visit around Hoxton Square itself, including the well-known White Cube gallery and the unusual Geffrye Museum, which devotes itself to the history of domestic furniture, but a taxi in N1 could take you to many other attractions and interesting locations in the area. If you’re in a morbid frame of mind, or simply in need of a relaxing break from the noise and bustle of the city, a short ride by Hoxton taxi could take you to Bunhill Fields, a quiet little dissenters’ cemetery which homes the remains of such famous literary and poetic figures as William Blake and Daniel Defoe, as well as tranquil glades occupied by wild owls which are perfect for a quiet picnic.
Alternatively, and especially if you have children in tow, a taxi from Hoxton could deliver you to the nearby Hackney City Farm, once a working farm and brewery, where you can now have fun petting farmyard animals such as pigs, goats, sheep, cows and donkeys.
Or, travelling a little further afield again, you can easily reach several other East London attractions from Hoxton. The Museum of London is a huge exhibition museum detailing the history of the city of London from prehistory to the present day, and the Museum and Library of the Order of Saint John is based in original sixteenth century gatehouse of the knightly order that is perhaps now most famous for founding the Saint John’s Ambulance service, and now features an exhibition detailing the history of the order including a range of artefacts including paintings, treasures and arms.
And if you’re hungry, it isn’t very far, especially by taxi from Hoxton Square, to travel to Aldgate and take an evening walk down Brick Lane, famously home to a huge number of Bangladeshi curry houses, and resultantly a great place to pick up a highly competitive deal on a spice-laden Eastern feast for yourself and your travelling companions!
