Goodge Street Useful Information
Goodge Street is the name of a road in central London, and the name of the nearby tube station on Tottenham Court Road. Inside the zone 1 area of the London Underground, you can take the Northern Line here. When the station opened in 1907, it was actually called ‘Tottenham Court Road station’, but this was changed the following year when the present interchange at Tottenham Court road was built. One interesting thing about Goodge Street station is that it is one of the only eight London Underground stations still open with a World War II deep air raid shelter. It wasn’t open to the public at that time, but was used by the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, and later to accommodate thousands of troops. We know where to go if there’s ever an asteroid heading towards Earth!
As with most central London tube stations, it can get very busy during rush hour. Even more congestion is caused by the fact that the station still operates lifts instead of escalators, limiting the number of people who can get into or out at one time. A lot of people choose to book Goodge Street taxis in W1 instead, avoiding the heavy flow of passengers.
