Farringdon Useful Information
If you’re unfamiliar with London history and geography, you might be a little confused by Farringdon. First of all there’s the train station that goes by that name in Clerkenwell, the London Borough of Islington, and also the surrounding area. A bit further south is the historic area in the City of London, which was the original Farringdon. To further your confusion, you may hear references to ‘Farringdon Within’ and ‘Farringdon Without’; these two wards were split back in 1394, according to whether the area fell inside or outside the London Wall. The wards had a major review in 2003, and some parts were assigned to other wards to minimise confusion.
Luckily, most of this information isn’t really important (unless you’re writing an essay on it!). There is only one Farringdon Station with tube and Thameslink lines, and each place in the area has it’s own address. Although the boundaries are undefined, you can get a general idea of the area! With the invention of tom-toms and iphones, it’s almost impossible to get lost; however, if you’re unsure of where you’re going, you can book an EC1 taxi in Farringdon to take you to your destination. Farringdon minicabs have an extensive knowledge of the city, and they can take you wherever you need to go.
Farringdon is a good place to stay when you’re visiting London. It’s close to Kings Cross, where many national rail trains come into the city, and there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from cheap B&Bs; to upmarket hotels. Situated so centrally, it’s easy to get anywhere in the city from here. You could travel north to browse the markets in Camden, east to the fashionable bars of Shoreditch, south to Waterloo pier and Southbank, or west to the famous theatreland in the West End. You can book EC1 cabs in Farringdon for any time, or take public transport such as the bus or tube. Because London is such a big city, it can take over an hour to travel from one side of town to the other, so it will save you a lot of time staying somewhere central.
Although there are no major tourist attractions in this area, there are loads of bars and restaurants to choose from, so you’ll never find yourself with nothing to do. If you’re into British history, there are often talks on at the British Postal Museum in Phoenix Place. Don’t fret if you’re looking for something more lively - Fabric, one of the most famous nightclubs in the world, is based here. If you’re into any kind of dance, house or drum and bass music, that’s the place for you. The tubes will definitely have stopped running by the time you call it a night, so make sure your Farringdon minicab is booked to take you home.
