Elephant and Castle Useful Information
The rather unusually named area of Elephant and Castle was actually once more properly known as Newington. It seems that the area adopted the nick-name Elephant and Castle as a reaction to the number of other places in London which shared its name, in order to distinguish it. The name Elephant and Castle appears to have come from an inn and coach-house by that name which once stood at its main junction.
If you are in the vicinity of Elephant and Castle and seeking somewhere to visit by SE1 taxi, there are plenty of interesting attractions and locations nearby. If military history floats your boat (or should that be battle-ship?), an Elephant and Castle taxi could take you very easily to the Imperial War Museum, which perhaps appropriately is situated in the building which was once home to the Bethlem Hospital For The Insane, the infamous lunatic asylum once known as Bedlam (from where we derive that word), but now home to some six million artefacts of the United Kingdom’s military engagements, including displays and interactive exhibits, as well as large pieces of ordnance and armoured vehicles.
An alternative, if you are in a museum-visiting frame of mind, would be to take a short ride by taxi in Elephant and Castle to the Cuming museum, which provides some local history of the Southwark area, as well as a chance to view the Cuming family’s collection of exhibits. Or, if it’s a nice day, you could take a stroll in the nearby Burgess Park, which is also just a short distance by taxi in SE1.
If you want to travel a little further from Elephant and Castle itself, it is only a short journey to the river, where you will find many of London’s most famous attractions and landmarks, including London Bridge, the Tate Modern art gallery, and if you don’t mind travelling a little further down-river, Tower Bridge and the of course the Tower of London, site of so many infamous imprisonments and executions in the city of London’s long, bloody history!
Just north of Elephant and Castle, you will also find Southwark’s well-known Borough Market, a great place to try and buy all manner of food and edible goods, and also not very far, whether on foot by taxi, from many of the other riverside attractions London has to offer, and is therefore a very good place to look around before resuming your travels - once you’ve eaten a delicious lunch, of course!
