Charing Cross Useful Information
Technically, ‘Charing Cross’ refers to the junction where Whitehall, Cockspur Street and the Strand meet. Originally named after the the Eleanor Cross that was demolished long ago, there is now a statue of King Charles I on horseback standing at this point.
The Strand is a famous London street; you may recognise the name from the British monopoly board. In Victorian times, it was the hub of nightlife and theatre, as well as being lined with mansions and palaces owned by royal courtiers and bishops. It’s not quite so grand these days, and many of the theatres have closed down or have been demolished, but plenty still remain. Here, you can visit the Savoy theatre, the Lyceum, the Adelphi and the Vaudeville theatre. If you’re planning to make a night of it, one of the WC2 minicabs Charing Cross has to offer can take care of your journey.
Next door to Charing Cross station, you’ll find Trafalgar Square - one of the most famous squares in the world. In the middle stands Nelson’s Column, which is guarded by four statues of lions. This impressive space is used to display contemporary art, exhibitions, political demonstrations and also celebration gatherings, such as New Year’s Eve. It’s a popular tourist attraction, and well worth visiting if you’re in London. The fountain in the middle is usually littered with coins, thrown by those making wishes; at night, it lights up with a pretty LED display. It’s an easy walk from here to Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, where you’ll find so many bars and restaurants that you’ll find it hard to choose where to go!
You won’t be short of places to stay, either; there are plenty of accommodation options. Charing Cross taxis can take you from the station to one of the nearby hotels for the duration of your stay; the prices vary so you can find a place suitable for your budget and your specifications. It’s the best place to be based - right in the middle of the action.
