Chancery Lane Useful Information
Since 1994, Chancery Lane has been the street that serves as the Western boundary of the City of London. Before that, it had been divided between Camden and Westminster, so you can imagine how centrally located it is in the city. It has its own London Underground tube stations on the Central Line (the red one), which is one of the fastest lines, as well as being one of the busiest. Taking the tube on this route can get you across town very quickly, but watch out if it’s rush hour - you could end up feeling like a sardine! Between the hours of 7.30 and 9.00 in the morning, or 5.00 and 6.30 in the evening, hundreds of commuters also have this idea, which leads to overcrowding. If you want to avoid the squash, Chancery Lane minicabs are always available to take bookings. Often, people preempt the rush and book one of the WC2 taxis Chancery Lane offers in advance.
Much like the closely surrounding area, Chancery Lane is predominately occupied by law firms, consulting firms and other legal professionals. If you take a walk down there on your lunch hour, you’re sure to see your fair share of smart power suits and leather briefcases! It comes as no surprise that this is where you’ll find the principal building for the Law Society of England and Wales, at number 119. This is the professional body for solicitors, and is very conveniently located for many lawyers based nearby.
Despite this being a popular area for legal professionals, you by no means have to be one to come here. There are plenty of other businesses that appeal to other people, such as antique silver dealers, and shops for repairs, restoration and valuation of antique jewellery. Down the road you can do a bit of karaoke, and even some belly dancing!
As you might expect from such a central area, there is no shortage of bars and restaurants here; in the surrounding streets, you’ll find recognisable chains such as Pizza Express and the Slug and Lettuce, as well as specialist restaurants such as Vanilla Black, which serves vegetarian food. Most places are within walking distance if you’re staying here, but if you’re a bit further afield it may be more convenient to order a WC2 cab in Chancery Lane. This is also a good plan if you’re planning to have a glass of wine or two, or some other alcoholic tipple; you don’t need to worry about how you’ll get home later; Chancery Lane taxis have it covered for you. Remember, the tubes finish running about midnight, so it’s wise to arrange your transport in advance.
