Bond Street Useful Information
Named for the Thomas Bond - the developer who created them - the twin roads that make up Bond Street (Old Bond Street and New Bond Street) are fashionable and upmarket shopping locations in the Mayfair area, easily reachable by a W1 taxi. Indeed, Bond Street and Mayfair are both locations you will likely be familiar with from the Monopoly board, in which they are green and royal blue properties respectively, and amongst the most expensive in the game, which is far from inaccurate, as Bond Street is indeed at time of writing the most expensive retail location in the whole of Europe!
If you are travelling by taxi in W1 and want to visit the area, there are several well-known venues which may be worth a visit. Perhaps most famously, Sotheby’s auction house is a well-known fixture of Bond Street, which, having been dealing in high-value antiques at its current location for over 130 years, is the fourth oldest auction house in the world.
It should be noted that Bond Street London Underground station is not in fact on Bond Street, but on Oxford Street. However, it is only a short walk away - or, if you are feeling exceptionally lazy, a short ride in a Bond Street taxi! Of course, Oxford Street itself is a well-known hub for high-street fashion shops, and certainly worth visiting if you want to go shopping but your budget doesn’t extend to bidding millions on masterworks at Sotheby’s!
There are also plenty of local attractions available to someone travelling by taxi from Bond Street. For instance, an interest in the history of common practice music might lead you to visit the Handel House Museum, built in the former residence of the well-known baroque composer, and featuring a large collection of his works, manuscripts and other items pertaining to his life and music. If you are more interested in listening to music yourself, the nearby Wigmore Hall is world-renowned for having reputedly the best acoustics for classical music in Europe, which makes catching a concert there a must if you’re in the area during a performance of one of your favourite compositions! And if painting and sculpture is more your cup of tea than music, you might also be interested in visiting the Wallace Collection, renowned for its large number of fine art masterworks.
All in all, Bond Street is well-situated to provide easy access by taxi or on foot to most of London’s West End, and makes a great base if you are staying in the city.
