Barnet Useful Information
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the area, the large London Borough of Barnet is part of Outer London, to the north of the city. A large part of it is inside the Metropolitan Green Belt, which means that there are lots of open spaces, parks and nature reserves. It just goes to show that not all of London is smog and concrete! Barnet is ideal for those who need to live close to the city, but enjoy country life; it’s much more tranquil than Central London. Many of the parks here have received ‘Green Flag Awards’, so you can be confident that you’ll find high standards of cleanliness and safety, with a welcoming feel. This attracts all ages to the area, giving families somewhere for their children to play, a place for people to walk their dogs or take long walks in the fresh air. Its appeal lies in the fact that the area also has all of the amenities you might need close by.
This borough is very popular with people who work in the city; it’s an easy commute, with plenty of transport links available. The Northern Line on the London Underground runs all the way to High Barnet, Mill Hill East and Edgware; there are National Rail services on overground trains from Barnet, and there is also a good bus service. Barnet has been criticised in the past by former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, who claimed that the borough was “anti-public transport” after cycle lanes were removed. However successful public transport is, there will always be Barnet taxis available for anyone who wishes to travel immediately or in advance. Minicabs in Barnet run a consistently good business, thanks to their reliability and efficiency.
The main town here is called ‘High Barnet’ or ‘Chipping Barnet’. It is a historic town, built on a twelfth century settlement; there has been a market here ever since the thirteenth century, which is still visited by locals and visitors alike. If you’re staying in the area, perhaps you could book a cab in Barnet to take you along. As the home to British aviation, fanatics often come to this borough to visit the RAF Museum and see full size aeroplanes on display. Other attractions include the Golf Course at Mill Hill, and the Jewish Museum, which has a moving Holocaust Gallery. If you know what to look for, this borough has a lot to offer.
Just like other London boroughs, there is a wide selection of bars, restaurants and hotels to choose from. The growing Japanese community provides some great sushi, to rival the area’s traditional salt beef sandwiches! Take taxis in Barnet to find out for yourself.
