Aldgate Useful Information
Aldgate used to be the eastern gateway from the city to Whitechapel and the east end in the London Wall. Dating back to Roman times, it was one of the principal thoroughfares. The area is classed as a ward of London, surviving a medieval governmental system; it’s an important part of the city’s history. Now, most of the London wall has been demolished, but parts of it have been preserved in east London and are visited by tourists and locals alike.
These days, Aldgate is home to many insurance company offices, as well as three churches, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It connects central London to east London, and is becoming more and more popular as the sprawling city spills over into surrounding areas. The desirable areas of Tower Hill and Bank/Monument are within walking distance, and there are plenty of easy transport links into the city. You’ll see Aldgate taxis in EC1 cruising past on the high street, often taking business people to meetings in the area. You might find it hard to flag one down as they’re usually occupied - to avoid frustration and disappointment you can book taxis in Aldgate online.
One of the most famous new landmarks in London is found here; have you heard of the Gherkin? It’s located at 30, St Mary’s Axe. The tall, glass building is visible from most points in East London, shaping the city’s modern skyline. It was built in 2005, and has become known for its unusual shape - sometimes the subject of mockery!
There was tragedy near Aldgate in 2005, when one of the 7/7 bombings occurred on a London Underground train. Seven people were killed, and the station was closed while repairs went underway. Don’t worry though; there have been no other incidents in the area since then and everything’s back on track! Just in case you prefer not to use the tube, there are always Aldgate minicabs available to take your bookings.
If you’re out and about in Aldgate, there’s plenty to do. You can eat at popular chains such as La Tasca and The Real Greek, have a coffee in Costa or grab some fast food at Burger King. The streets are lined with choices, so take a stroll and see what takes your fancy! Due to the number of offices located there, the busiest times are at lunchtime and after work, from 5 - 7pm. You’ll find that plenty of business people like to meet for a drink or a bite to eat around this time, unwinding after their busy day. Get an EC1 taxi to Aldgate and join them!
