Acton Useful Information
If you’re not completely sure where Acton is, we can understand your confusion; there are several villages and towns in the UK which go by this name, as well as others around the world. It seems to be a popular choice when it comes to naming locations! However, we’re here to give you some information about just one of them, and that’s Acton in London.
Predominantly found in the London Borough of Ealing, Acton is an urban district to the west of the city. As well as having plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs, there is also the largest housing estate in London here in West Acton, with a whopping 5,800 residents! The whole area is currently undergoing major redevelopments, which will take place over 15 years to regenerate the area. Many current residential units will be demolished to make way for the new buildings. You might recognise the South Acton housing estate from long running TV show ‘Only Fools and Horses’; it was filmed here, despite the characters living in Peckham in the script.
Another interesting fact is that Acton has more railway stations than anywhere else in the city; a total of seven include the area in their names! For the London Underground, there is North, East and West Acton, as well as Acton Town. Above ground, there is Acton Central, South Acton and Acton Mainline railway stations. Certainly a good location for train-spotters! If you’re not such a fan of busy trains, there are always Acton taxis as a transport option. It’s easy to get a cab in Acton at any time of day or night, and the prices can be very reasonable; Acton taxi drivers also know the area well so will be able to take you the quickest route.
The area was an ancient village recorded in the Domesday Book, and the names translates from Anglo-Saxon as ‘Oak Farm’; there’s a lot of history here. It was based on the road from London to Oxford, and many inns still remain on that route from centuries ago, where travellers would stop tor rest. In the 17th century, the local springs became health spas, eventually serving the upper class hotels in West London as laundries. As the city of London expanded, Acton became part of it.
The first ever Waitrose store opened in Acton in 1904 (originally called Waite, Rose and Taylor). Today, there is a huge choice, from Wetherspoons pubs (The Red Lion and Pineapple) to Thai and Chinese restaurants. St George and the Dragon has been restored on the High Street, earning top ratings as a traditional style pub. Book an Acton minicab to get you there, or to drive you home in the evening when you’ve had one too many!
